I determined that I can use google voice to call my family in Canada using my ordinary US cell phone minutes (that I rarely use otherwise). Then I used it to call my parents, whom I haven't talked to in a few weeks. Despite my growing concerns that they had disappeared off the face of the earth, they live and are fine!
