I helped build a house today. I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, and I am always struck by how empowering their model is to pretty much everyone: volunteers are handed a lot of construction confidence and slowly gain construction competence (to bastardize a phrase from kaberett, and new homeowners (in addition to getting a house) get the same sort of construction confidence and competence, as well as useful financial classes and useful home repair classes.
