It turns out that when a Lip Smacker ages past oh say ... 10 years ... it can develop some compound that tastes and feels like burning! It is not pleasant. I had fished it out of the bottom of the lip balm bag and set it next to bed, but when I had a lip balm emergency in the middle of the night I went "Oh, F that!", tossed it in the bin, and tiptoed into the bathroom and grabbed another random (much newer) lip balm and scrubbed off my face. And everyone was much happier.
