It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished!

Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

I have been doing stuff in the garden both today and yesterday. This is very unusual for me. The garden is something I like to have and to look at but very little interest in looking after. It's Husband's territory, really, but if I have a suggestion for something I'd like, he usually lets me do it, only he generally demands I participate in choosing suitable plants and putting them in. Therefore, I am now actively waging (poison-free) war on ground elder.

Go you!

I have limited capacity for taking care of things. I can do a few annuals and such. Mostly, though, I expect my landscaping to take care of itself so I use a lot of native species.

I wouldn't actually mind the ground elder if it was only a little better behaved. It spreads like a mad thing, though, and drowns everything else. There a very few other weeds in that area.

When you've got a single weed causing trouble, you can kill it with science. Research its needs -- every plant needs a specific (if sometimes wide) set of circumstances to grow. Deny it those by changing the environment, and it will struggle or die out. But as long as it likes the environment you're making, it will grow like crazy.

So for instance, most weeds flourish in poor, bare soil. This is because they are bandage plants -- their job is to jump on things like a landslide and tie down the soil so it doesn't escape, which is why almost all weeds have massive root systems. Conversely, few weeds do well in rich soil or if it is covered with mulch, plants, etc. They are then outcompeted by other plants better suited to those circumstances but which would not grow on poor, bare soil.

When you have many different weeds, you're left with general approaches like adding heaps of compost and keeping the soil covered. But with an individual plant, you can research to see if it has other weaknesses too -- some won't grow near certain other plants, in acidic or alkaline soil, etc.

I did laundry. This was a bugger deal then usual as I had to go to the laundromat. We have a washing machine but it's broken. Since it's a portable one I'm having trouble finding someone to fix it

Hmm ...

Portables can be divided into two types: the ones that are meant to be used casually then thrown away, and the ones built like a brick shithouse that are meant to be repaired at home by DIY mavens. If you still have the manual, check that; the latter category often advise on basic repairs. You could also look at it to see how easy it is to take apart; the DIY ones are designed to break down easily so they can be fixed. If you have a DIY model then you might be able to fix it yourself, or just find a friend with some handiwork skill. If it's meant to be disposable, it may not be fixable by anyone.

Its a black & decker and it's lasted a while so far. I think about a year. I have looked at the manuel but it only shows the error codes that display and how to fix those. Not how to fix other common problems. This issue doesn't have an error code showing at all. I didn't realize it wasn't working till I went to check a load and it was dripping wet. 😠

Black & Decker makes many durable tools, but anything electronic usually leans toward the "disposable" side in modern society. :/ Also, if it's not giving an error code, repairmen trained on error codes may not know how to troubleshoot other types of errors: a common problem in car mechanics now. Most of them aren't real mechanics anymore -- people who tinker with things -- they're just following a list of "if A then B" instructions and anything not on that list is over their head so they can't fix it.

Done!

Got a Craigslist expedition set up and rolling in a short amount of time.

Organized a pit stop on the way back.
