Tried to educate someone dear to me about what it's really like being an immigrant. Probably failed, but still. I had to try.

Sympathies. It's a draining task, especially considering the level of ignorance that most natives have about the realities of dealing with UKBA/the Home Office when you're not a British citizen.

Yep. I made exactly that point in not (originally) blaming my friend for his ill-informed reaction -- the media and politicians are so busy pandering to bigots they never talk about what immigrants' experiences are like. But he quickly turned into one of those "being called a racist is worse than doing something racist" people, and I don't think he got much out of what I said at all.
